Ages and Stages

Benjamin Bloom on Piano Study

Piano teachers have the unique opportunity of working with a child year after year, sometimes for their entire childhood. We have a front row seat to the stages they experience as they grow from young children into teenagers. Working with children of different ages requires teachers to become like a chameleon, adapting our communication style and curriculum focus to the age and stage of each student. Benjamin Bloom and his researchers provided a three-stage framework for understanding child development in the book Developing Talent in Young People. Conscious awareness of these stages allows us to better serve our students as they grow and change. In this session, Dr. Hague will outline Bloom’s research and provide her own specific insights and ideas for guiding children through their stages of growth in piano study.

Creative Kids

Teaching Composition at the Elementary Level

Is your student the next Beethoven? Perhaps! By teaching students to compose, you just might discover unknown gifts of musical creativity in your students! Incorporating composition into the curriculum is incredibly motivating and builds confidence in our students. Composing also enhances reading, theory, and general musicianship skills. Sometimes composition may seem like an intimidating topic to include in our teaching. In this session, Dr. Hague will present teacher-friendly activities and assignments that will serve as a springboard for guiding our students in their creative journey.

Great Playing from the Start

Foundations of Elementary-Level Piano Technique

One of our responsibilities as piano teachers is to provide our students with a foundation in piano technique that will allow them to progress to the advanced levels. Dr. Hague chose beginning-level technique as her dissertation topic to gain confidence that she was teaching her own students effectively. In this session, she will share insights discovered in her research. Teachers will learn what technical concepts are most important at the elementary level and how to effectively present these ideas to our students.
